MEDIA RELEASE
UPDATE : 11am
Before dawn this morning, 8 peace activists entered the top secret Swan Island military base near Queenscliff. The group entered in the early hours of the morning to nonviolently disrupt preparations for the imminent war in Iraq. Four of the activists were discovered, detained and assaulted by SAS soldiers on the base. The treatment of the activists by the SAS bordered on torture. The experiences of the four were:- Forcibly stripped naked, handcuffed, struck on the face and choked
– Activists clothing were cut off with knives
– Hessian bags were placed over their heads and told “welcome to the bag motherfucker and asked “do you want to go for a swim” before being dragged naked across the ground
– SAS personnel stood on activists’ heads and backs causing injury and said “If you move we will kick you in the face”
– Dragged and dropped on the ground when didn’t respond to questionsWhen the Victorian Police arrived on the scene the assaults ceased. “I was thankful for the arrival of the police, when they got there I finally felt safe” said peace activist Sam Quinlan. An ambulance was called to the front gate as activists were released from custody to attend to activists’ injuries.“The use of these tactics on citizens of Australia peacefully protesting the actions of the SAS is an alarming indication of the use of torture SAS is employing in Iraq, Afghanistan and other undisclosed locations” says Greg Rolles an activist who entered the military facility.“We were trying to disrupt the preparations for this imminent war and are concerned that Australia’s involvement will only play into the hands of militant extremists” said Jasmine Pilbrow another member of the group.

The group are particularly concerned about the role of the SAS, who use Swan Island in their ongoing role in Afghanistan as well as likely roles in Iraq and Syria.

“There are clear alternatives to bombing ISIS” said Fiona Taylor who is currently at the Swan Island main gate. “Blocking oil supply channels, having arms embargoes and support of a regional solution all will cripple ISIS without breeding another generation of militant extremists”.

The protestors are part of the Swan Island Peace Convergence, which has seen protestors blockading the island’s only entrance since Tuesday, preventing traffic onto the island. It is the fifth consecutive year of protests at the Island.

  1. Well done to the Activists who braved this inhumane treatment by our own SAS servicemen. Such a disgrace to see and only brings forth theories of what kind of brutality others of different culture/nationality may have faced at the hands of our SAS troopers. An absolute disgrace from the SAS whom i hope are held accountable for these horrendous acts of torture.

  7. Are members of the SAS bound by proportionality in international humanitarian law? Or do they believe they are a law unto themselves? Will there be an investigation of these allegations? Does the SAS believe this kind of behaviour actually brings results?

    • Clearly, they believe they are a law unto themselves. And under this Government, they are probably correct. Will there be an investigation, possibly. By one of their own.

  9. I was most appalled and disgusted at this type of behaviour. We are condemning Isis for their brutality yet here we are in Australia, seeing similar actions being inflicted on innocent, peaceful protestors – I thought this was a democratic country?
If action is not taken by the military police then this shows they do not care for Australian citizens at all.
This should go to Court as it breaches humanitarian behaviour – if this occurred in another country we would be up in arms – let us not allow this behaviour to continue – it must be stopped and the SAS persons should be punished.

    • Yes I fully agree Judi, as a former soldier of the late 60s/early70s, we were an honourable army then. Sadly now I see catering corp cookies in full desert camouflage swaggering around Liverpool Westfields. Reminds me of Chile during Pinochet dictator ship. On the same day I see a pair of female parking revenue collectors, in an uniform almost the same style and colour of the Police, swaggering both thumbs in their belts , abreast on a rather crowded street. How quickly things have changed. We live in dangerous times from within us.

  11. Am thinking that it was not very clever of the activists to break into the barracks on Swan Island. Australia NEEDS a military presence wether you like it or not. The treatment was not what I would have expected from the SAS and they need to be told that.

  12. Well done activists Australia is drifting into a long war without discussion and for no reason. There is little alternative in Australia currently other than to actively resist this rush to war. Good work!
